YOUR ABUNDANCE JOURNEY BEGINS ON SUNDAYS

Shadow Work_ Meeting The Hidden Self_Unapologetic Manifestation

Most of us spend years trying to hide parts of ourselves. We hide our fear, anger, insecurity. grief, jealousy, shame, and sometimes even our brilliance. We learn which parts are acceptable and which parts must stay hidden in the shadows. But what stays buried still shapes our lives.

Shadow work is not about becoming digging into the dark parts of you. It’s about becoming whole. It is the courageous practice of bringing unconscious patterns into awareness so they no longer run us from behind the scenes.

Carl Jung taught that the shadow contains not only the parts of ourselves we reject, but also the gifts we fear claiming. Sometimes we suppress our confidence, creativity, power, joy, voice, or leadership because somewhere along the way we learned those qualities were “too much.” Too loud. Too emotional. Too sensitive. Too ambitious. Too powerful.

Marianne Williamson famously wrote, “It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” I believe there is deep spiritual truth in that statement.

For many people, it is easier to identify with brokenness than with greatness. We know how to explain our wounds. We know how to defend our limitations. But fully stepping into our gifts, our visibility, our worthiness, and our power can feel terrifying. Because if we truly claim our light, then we can no longer hide behind the old story of who we thought we were.

I saw this dynamic very clearly in my own life growing up. My brother is 11 months older than me, and throughout thirteen years of school, I followed behind this overachieving, Eagle Scout, captain of the wrestling team, valedictorian brother. Year after year, teachers and adults would ask me, “Are you as smart as your brother?”
Because I didn’t learn the way he did or think the way he did, I slowly began answering that question internally with: “No. I’m not.” I carried that belief for years.

But the truth was never that I lacked intelligence. The truth was that my intelligence expressed differently. My gifts lived in creativity, communication, emotional insight, spirituality, performance, leadership, and connection. Yet because they did not mirror the kind of intelligence I had been taught to value most, I unconsciously pushed parts of myself into the shadows.

Many of us do this. We compare ourselves to someone else’s gifts and decide our own light does not count. We diminish ourselves before life ever gets the chance to fully see us.

Healing begins when we stop running from ourselves. When we become willing to look honestly at both our wounds and our gifts, we begin integrating the fragmented parts of our lives. The goal is not perfection. The goal is integration. The more of yourself you can lovingly acknowledge, the freer you become.

Shadow work asks us to stop fearing our humanity and stop apologizing for our light. It invites us into something deeper than self-improvement: self-acceptance. And from that place, real transformation begins.

PRACTICE FOR THE WEEK: Name the Shadow

Ask yourself:

“What emotion do I judge most harshly in others?”
“What quality in myself do I try hardest to hide?”
“What gift am I afraid to fully claim?”

Write honestly. No editing. No spiritual performance.
