YOUR ABUNDANCE JOURNEY BEGINS ON SUNDAYS

Your Past Is Not Your Prison - Unapologetic Manifestation

Many of us unconsciously organize our identities around the past. We repeat family stories, inherited fears, diagnoses, disappointments, and old emotional wounds until they begin to feel permanent.

“My family has always struggled.”
“I’ve never been good with money.”
“I’m just not that smart.”
“This is just who I am.”

The moment we declare something permanent; we stop imagining new possibilities.

Your history matters. Your wounds matter. Your experiences have shaped you. But they do not have to define the totality of your future.

I have been discovering that truth in a very personal way.

At sixty-six years old, I became a first-time author. After spending decades as a Broadway performer, director, minister, and speaker, I suddenly found myself stepping into an entirely new identity. People began introducing me as an author and thought leader. They invited me to podcasts, interviews, and conferences. My ideas began reaching people I had never met. And yet, if I’m honest, something inside me resisted.

Old beliefs I’d carried for decades quietly resurfaced. They questioned whether I was intelligent enough, whether my ideas really mattered, whether I deserved to be successful, and even whether I was allowed to earn a living doing work I love.

I often joke that I couldn’t even spell “author” until I wrote a book.

People laugh, but beneath the humor is a lifetime of deeply ingrained belief systems-what I affectionately call my B.S. They were the stories I had accepted about my worth, my abilities, my value, and what I believed was possible for my life.

Those beliefs didn’t come from reality. They came from years of repetition. Once I believed those stories, my mind began looking for evidence that they were true. Psychologists call this confirmation bias-our tendency to notice, remember, and emphasize the experiences that support what we already believe while overlooking the evidence that contradicts it.

If I believe I’m not intelligent enough, I’ll remember every mistake and discount every success. If I believe I don’t deserve abundance, I’ll notice every setback while minimizing every opportunity.

We begin seeing the world through the lens of our old beliefs, reinforcing them until they feel like undeniable truth. Before long, we find ourselves living inside a prison of our own making-not because the bars are real, but because we’ve stopped looking beyond them.

The beautiful thing is that the same mind that learned those beliefs can also learn new ones. Every time we question an old story, every time we choose a truer thought, every time we act from our highest self instead of our oldest fear, another bar begins to bend.

Little by little, I’ve been noticing those old stories, questioning them, and replacing them with something truer. Every interview, every class I teach, every person whose life is touched by my work bends another bar of the prison I unknowingly built for myself. It isn’t happening all at once. It happens one belief at a time. Bar by bar, I am setting myself free, and that invitation is available for all of us.

Neuroscience tells us that the brain continues to change throughout our lives. Spiritual wisdom reminds us that we are never finished becoming. We are not condemned to repeat yesterday simply because yesterday happened. Your past may explain some of your story, but it does not get to write the ending.

There is extraordinary freedom in realizing that you are allowed to become someone new. In fact, perhaps the person you are becoming has been waiting patiently beneath those old belief systems all along, ready to emerge the moment you stop confusing your history with your identity. There is enormous freedom in realizing you are allowed to become someone new.

PRACTICE FOR THE WEEK: Rewrite One Identity Statement

Notice one limiting statement you repeat about yourself and rewrite it.

Instead of:
“I’ve always struggled with confidence.”

Try:
“I am learning to trust myself more every day.’

Quote of the week (from Unapologetic Manifestation)

“You are not required to remain loyal to an identity built from survival.”
