Verity Consciousness: Remembering Oneness

I came face to face with this truth in one of the most painful moments of my life.

In 1998, I oversaw the burial of my lover, Gary, after he died from a drug overdose. I was the one who had to call his parents and tell them that their youngest-and only remaining-child had died. They traveled to New York, heartbroken and grieving beyond words, and I arranged for them to have a viewing at the funeral home before he was cremated.

Gary he had been autopsied, and there had been no attempt to cosmetically prepare his body. He lay on a cold metal gurney, unadorned and exposed. The scars and rough stitches from the autopsy were clearly visible. I remember how frightened I felt when I saw him. I tried to prepare his elderly parents as best I could before we were led into the room.

And then something happened that changed me forever.

The moment they saw him, they rushed to his body. They held him, kissed him, cried over him, and loved him with every ounce of their being. Tears streamed down all our faces as they embraced their baby one last time. In that room, there was no separation between Spirit and form, no hesitation, no fear, no conditions, no judgment.
There was only love. That moment is seared into my consciousness.

What I witnessed that day was Oneness consciousness-not as an abstract spiritual concept, but as a lived reality. Gary’s parents were not loving an idea, a memory, or merely a body. They were responding to something eternal moving through all of us, something that transcends even death itself.

That experience taught me something I continue striving to remember every day: the physical and the spiritual are not separate. Love moves through both. Spirit expresses itself through flesh, tears, touch, grief, tenderness, and human connection. Verity consciousness is the knowing that beneath all appearances, we belong to one another and to something infinitely greater than ourselves.

When we begin experiencing life from this level of awareness, compassion grows naturally. Fear loosens. Competition softens. We stop asking only, “What can I get?” and begin asking, “How can I participate in healing, beauty, and connection?”

Mystics across traditions have pointed toward this truth for centuries: beneath all apparent separation, there is one life expressing itself in countless forms.

In Unapologetic Manifestation, I write about manifestation not simply as personal achievement, but as participation in a larger unfolding of love, healing, and possibility. Verity consciousness reminds us that we are never truly separate from one another, from the Divine, or from the sacred mystery of life itself.

And when we remember that, even briefly, something in us comes home.
